At P&E Lowlands, one might expect us to applaud rising oil prices as they fuel consumers' awareness of the importance of energy independence, which is good for our business.
Energy independence is of paramount importance to Europe. We do not want to become a pawn in the trade and other wars that are raging in the world and are likely to have a negative impact on our economy.
Will the consumer, our governments and their electorate now come to realise that a commitment to renewable energy not only serves the climate in the long term, but also our economy in the short term?
Energy independence and the energy efficiency it requires can be achieved in many ways.
Often the nuclear solution is first and foremost considered. However, nuclear energy is linked to the safety risks associated with nuclear power plants and to the problem of waste storage, which is unfortunately swept under the carpet too quickly. It is true that megalomaniacal nuclear projects are now in the pipeline that focus on nuclear fusion, but even though they do not produce CO2, they make us even more dependent on one or only a few foreign energy suppliers than before. Moreover, they will not be able to supply electricity until 2050.
Let’s get rid of this and stop nourishing the bank accounts of these happy few, who will ruthlessly and unilaterally determine the energy costs of our companies. Let's take our energy future into our own hands!

Today, more than ever, independence is key to the post-fossil era.
Coal and oil cannot be coloured green, but natural gas can. Natural gas contains hydrogen. If we remove the hydrogen in a reactor, carbon or CO2 will remain. While producing hydrogen, we can capture CO2 and process it into building materials and raw materials for industry. Carbon is light and strong, just think of our carbon race bikes.
Hydrogen from natural gas or from residual flows from chemical processes is called blue hydrogen, but in fact it is as green as green hydrogen because no CO2 is released during the production process.
Green hydrogen is hydrogen we produce from the surplus of electricity generated by PV installations or wind turbines. The molecule is the same as that of blue hydrogen but the origin is different.
The advantage of hydrogen is that it serves as a fuel to generate electricity without CO2 emissions. The perfect picture.
We are convinced that in the short term we will have sufficient production capacity of electricity from renewable sources.
However, in order to provide sufficient energy at all times to meet all our energy needs, we need a huge amount of hydrogen.
Tomorrow it will be blue and green hydrogen but in thirty years' time only green hydrogen will be left. Only then will we be 100% energy independent.
More importantly, we already have the technology to make us less dependent on countries outside Europe from tomorrow on.
